Pretreated graphite has the following two significant impacts on the impurity content of synthesized diamonds:
Significant reduction in catalyst-related impurities: It has been confirmed through electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and electron microscope energy spectrum analysis that the content of catalyst-related impurities in diamonds synthesized with pretreated graphite flakes is significantly reduced. Moreover, whether in the defect areas or the inclusion parts of the diamond, the content of these catalyst impurities is significantly lower than that in ordinary synthetic diamonds.
Significant increase in nitrogen content: Compared with ordinary diamonds, the nitrogen content in diamonds synthesized with pretreated graphite flakes is substantially increased
. The pretreatment makes it more favorable for nitrogen to replace carbon atoms in the diamond crystal lattice, which not only affects the physical properties and crystal structure of the diamond but is also an important reason for its enhanced compressive strength.
In addition, electron microscope energy spectrum analysis also observed that after using pretreated graphite flakes for synthesis, the contents of certain other trace elements inside the diamond also underwent corresponding changes (increases or decreases).
